PA5. Architecture and Composition

In the previous practice, I chose to talk about the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano.

I chose a different work of his, and it is called Zentrum Paul Klee. It is an art museum located in Bern, Switzerland. It is dedicated to the work of the famous Swiss painter Paul Klee. The museum was designed by the architect Renzo Piano and opened in 2005.

So there are some composition aspects in this work like symmetry, hierarchy, rhythm…

Symmetry:

So as we can see the main characteristic of this building is that it is split into three curved buildings.

And each one of these three has a symmetry axe in the middle, and each half is symmetrical to the other.

Hierarchy:

It is evident that these three buildings have different sizes although they are the same shape. They go from bigger to smaller from left to right. The biggest building is almost twice the size of the smallest.

Unity:

All the lines go together from the start to the end of the buildings, and no line can be removed because of the visual connection that unites them.

Rhythm:

We can observe a repetition of the lines that constitute this building, as they are all parallel, have the same shape, and same distance in between. They also curve in the same place to create the shape of this museum.

Scale:

There is a relation between the size of the building and the
size of the human being in this as we can see in the picture the front of the building in glass is divided into many parts and each one of them is roughly the same height as a human.

Texture:

The building looks artistic and minimal on the outside and has a smooth texture to it.

Movement:

The movement of the lines is unique as they move and get curved throughout the shape of the museum.
